Today I met with Giuseppe Lombardi of the Stirling Project, who had spent a week camping near Arnhem during
the celebrations of Market Garden last weekend.

Early this year I have acquired a complete Stirlng tailwheel and tyre in good condition with the intention to donate it to the Stirling Project. It was arranged to meet somewhere along the A12 highway in Holland while Giuseppe was on the way back towards the Ferry. At the last moment my cell phone and his did not do what they originally are supposed to do (get in contact with each other). What to do?

Well, I knew that Giuseppe and his friends were driving an old green (what colour else) jeep with a mobile gun behind it so their speed couldn't be that fast. So I drove in the opposite direction on the A12 towards Arnhem hoping that I would spot them. After an hour I did see them and immideately got off the freeway at the first opportunity, and raced back to overtake them. Well, traffic was heavy with a lot of heavy cargotrucks everywhere and the weather wasn't helping either, but after ten minutes I finally caught up with them and pulled them over. It was a bit (?!!) dangerous to be chatting next to a busy highway so we drove to the nearest servicing station where we had some coffee and exchanged stories as well as the Stirling tail wheel.

Just to let you know that it something takes a bit more effort to make sure parts get at the right destination.

But I thoroughly enjoyed myself doing it.

By the way, if any one of you can help with parts etc. for the Stirling Project then please do. It would fill a huge (and that is taken literally as well) in British historic aviation.

Cheers

Cees
