Wow, certainly didn't notice that...even if I did see it. Very easy to miss things in a place like that, especially if you're not quite sure what you're looking at.
Just a guess, but maybe this engine came Walt's way when NASM (then the NAC) drastically downsized its collection in the fifties? They had, but got rid of, an awful lot of Axis stuff at that time (eg. the Ki84-II Hayate that went to Ed Maloney, or the G4M "Betty" of which they tragically scrapped everything but the nose section...and, say, weren't the engines on those 18-cylinder twin-row radials...?)
Yet another "what-if". I still think we could've used a few more Walts back in the day...
