Hi bdk--

Funny, I happened to spy the "633 Squadron" DVD a couple days ago as well. Hadn't been aware those were out on DVD.

Yes, it is agonizing to watch two or three B.35 Mossies go up in smoke for the sake of a film...and know these were no mockups. But this was the early sixties, of course; those Mossies were younger then than many, say, Tornado GR.1s are today. I'd venture to suggest the Mirisch films probably, in the long run, resulted in the saving of several Mossies that might otherwise simply have been discarded; viewed that way up, the "sacrifice" of a couple in the course of filming looks less, well, heinous.

Interestingly one of the earliest issues of Air Classics magazine included a feature--a promo piece, really--on "633 Squadron"...and one of the main illustrations was a promo still of one of the Mossies ablaze after a "crash". Nary a word in the piece about the loss of such a classic machine; plainly, times and perceptions change!

Cheers

S.
