Hi Les,
The BP Type E (as used in Halifax and Liberator) was generally regarded as the best tail turret used in RAF bombers. Reason for this was that altough it was cramped it always seemed to fit its gunner. Apart from that it was better to aim at a target below the aircraft (nightfighter tactic) because when the gunner depressed his guns, his seat automatically raised making it easier to keep the attacking aircraft in his sights. Also there was a high speed function available which made it possible to change targets very quickly if the need arose when two aircraft were attacking from both sides simultaneously.
Although I am biased, the above is based on actual facts.
Cheers
Cees
