Working group to review U.S. Air Force Museum policies and procedures

WASHINGTON, D.C. -
Air Force officials announced today that a working group will convene to assess the soundness of current operational policies and procedures used by the U.S. Air Force Museum.

The group, formed at the request of Air Force Materiel Command and in coordination with Headquarters Air Force, will deliver report findings to both Air Force Secretary Dr. James G. Roche and Air Force Museum Director Charles D. Metcalf according to Lt. Gen. Joseph H. Wehrle Jr., Air Force assistant vice chief of staff and chairman of the standing Air Force museum advisory group.

The U.S. Air Force Museum is the world's largest and oldest military aviation museum and the national museum for the U.S. Air Force.

The working group, consisting of civilian experts in museum operations, collection management and exhibit development and other professionals is expected to meet within the next several days. It will be chaired by a retired Air Force general officer. The panel will examine the museum's policies and procedures to determine if they meet or exceed recognized professional standards of comparable museums. Also, the panel will determine whether adequate safeguards are in place to detect and deter potential irregularities.

Group members will include retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Charles J. Cunningham Jr., former director of the Defense Security Service; Don Lopez, associate director of the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.; Ralph Bufano, director of the Museum of Flight in Seattle; David Ponitz, former president of Sinclair Community College in Dayton, Ohio; Jody Davis, former chief curator of the U.S. Army Museum System, and her successor, Judson E. Bennett Jr. Others may be added based on their particular expertise and availability.

The group intends to submit a written report within 30 days from its last meeting.

Media requiring more information should contact the U.S. Air Force Museum's Public Affairs Division at (937) 255-4704, ext. 331, 332, or 333.
