How to post photos

I know it has been asked before . . . I can't find my notes on how to post photos here.

I would like to post a couple of pix and need to know how to do it; can I post photos directly from my hard drive, or do they have to be stored somewhere web-wise?

If it can be done from my hard drive, what do I need to write (command, string, whatever)??
