Stratoliner returns to the skies
The Boeing 307 Stratoliner on Friday completed its first test flight following a year-long restoration. The airplane will make two more flights this week before departing Seattle on July 26 en route to its new home at the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C. Before enshrinement, the Stratoliner will stop in Oshkosh, Wis., for the 2003 AirVenture Air Show. About 70 employees and volunteers have worked to restore this historic airplane after it was forced to land in Elliott Bay in Seattle in March 2002. This airplane was originally delievered in 1942 to Pan American Airways, which dubbed the airplane "The Flying Clipper Cloud." Considered the world's first high-altitude airliner, the Stratoliner's pressurized cabin allowed pilots to fly "above the weather" at altitudes up to 20,000 feet.
