You're definitely right that a lot of specialised tooling is required to build a Mosquito (most of it exists now, actually!) and so the big issue has been the outlay required to make this tooling. Metal aircraft don't need such a big lump sum investment.
I don't think that you're right that it's more obscure than the P-38 though. Over on this side of the atlantic I think the Mossie is better known than the Lightning.
My personal feeling is that we'll see a lot more Mosquitos restored to fly over the next 10-20 years, assuming regulation stays relatively stable (perhaps that's a big assumption!)
