Statusreport WNr. 990001

Dear Friends !

Time is up for another progress report on our FW 190.

As it is very obvious, the forthcoming can not be easily documented by photos, since the amount of work needed for rectifications, alterations, tuning and measuring simply cannot be shown on photos.

Yet, we are very close to the first flight and the list with snags or open items gets shorter and shorter by now. If all comes together the way it is planned for, the first "Butcher Bird" will take to the air in Germany, after more than 55 years have passed by?

We anticipate to fly WNr. 990001 by the end of August through the beginning of September. Meantime Flug Werk GmbH is closing for the annual summer leave ? to allow our "Men In Black" the well-deserved break for rest an recreation.

The photos below show another day of testing the aircraft at the Manching AB. Start up of the Asch 82 is usually accompanied by a big bellow of smoke. The engine always comes to life with the first three blades and quickly settles into a smooth purr. All our assumptions in regards to cooling the engine, as well as cooling the oil have met their stringent targets during the ground testing phase. By now we have accumulated about 08:30 hours of engine time and meticulously logged all parameters by means of additional temperature pick-ups. Also, using a laser-based temperature sensing system, we have analysed the temperature distribution over the entire engine case, cylinders and cylinder heads.

The engine now powers the electrical system via a modern-day alternator, rather than the old DC-generator. This also allows the use of solid-state voltage regulation and overcomes the problems, usually associated with carbon-pile rectifiers ( which are usually a "good source" for inflight fires ).

The fuel system has again been subject to the reconstruction of new tanks, with the incorporation of anti-reversion flappers, not allowing any fuel to flow back during a go-around on minimum fuel. This will ensure positive fuel-feeding to the two turbo-pumps ( one in each main tank ), which are now able to pump almost the entire tank-contents of gas from both tanks to the engine-driven pump and onwards to the injection pump ( remember that the ASch 82 is a direct fuel injected engine, similar to the original BMW 801 D power plant of the Fw 190 A ? series )

Taxi testing has resulted in an optimised system between master-brake cylinders and wheel-brake cylinders. Brakes operation now is smooth, allowing for a fine dosage of pressure all the way to holding the entire aircraft at a still-stand, while 2000 hp are trying to pull it away?

The next test-phase will incorporate high-speed taxiing down the 12000 ft runway at up to Vmcg ( = minimum control speed ground ).

It is getting exciting now !

We will report about the results soon !

The photos below show the splendid result of one of our clients in the USA.

It is the Fw 190 WNr. 173056 owned and restored by Mr. Don Hansen of Baton Rouge / Louisiana USA. In "real life" this particular Fw 190 served as "White 14 with I./JG 11?

Most of the major components have been delivered by Flug Werk, as has been the case with the kit for the substitution of the former BMW-801 D aero-engine with the more modern and reliable ASch 82 14 cylinder radial. Flug Werk supplied all necessary stress-calculations and cooling analyses for the exchange of the powerplants as well. Propeller and main landing gear system also are Flug Werk products to supplement this exciting project.

Also, our North - American representative Mr. Jay C Thinnes and a professional photographer have taken up the task to photograph most of the Flug Werk FW 190 kit's components in the basking Arizona sun. It shows very well the state of structural completeness of the only full-size, as per 1940's original drawings and factory specs built, fighter-aircraft kit available in today's world. Dear FW 190 enthusiasts, thank you for the continued visits to our website. As you can imagine, our primary goal is to recreate and restore old warbirds. This is a very delicate and time-consuming task. The website is mainly thought to be our tool to show what we can offer to our prospective clients in terms of quantities and qualities, with emphasis on "highest quality". It is primarily not meant to be a means of entertainment. Therefore, just be patient to wait for updates and most of all stay away from sending us any notoriously unkind and anonymous e-mails. You will not accelerate things on our end. We will not substitute quality with any possible shortcuts. Restoring and flying warbirds is a very very serious affair and we want to make the good headlines in the media, not the bad ones ? for the sake of all who are interested in our continuing efforts. Thank you!
