So with the Merlin, the major difficulty is in the casting?
The best book to look at the basics of the Merlin is available from the RR Heritage Trust, and is titled the Merlin 100 Series. Looking the shape over it is quite complex. Second, the aluminum alloy is specificly designed for strength, and I believe that they knew many things back then about how slow to cool the mold, what to use to release the mold ect...Any deficiency in the casting process makes an unusable crankcase. Most of the information they used to be successful is probably lost to time...
