The old #1 engine on the B-24 was removed on July 2nd and all lines were flushed and all systems were cleaned and inspected. The new engine arrived the morning of July 3rd courtesy of FedEx. By the afternoon on the 3rd the new #1 was hung on the plane and work commenced getting all the stuff hooked up and tested. I just left Grand Junction, CO to head back East and the crew of Gary Thompson, Rob Collings, Steve Swift, and Larry Abston were still hard at work to get the job done in record time.
We would like to thank the help and support of West Star Aviation in Grand Junction for all of their assistance... what a great group of helpful people and their facilities are second to none! Also thanks to the nice folks at FedEx for their help on the ground at Grand Junction.
Most of all, thanks to the crew and support staff of the Collings Foundation both on the B-24, B-17, and the folks in Florida and Texas for the outstanding determination, teamwork, and committment to the mission of getting the job done at all costs. I am constantly astounded by this organization and the response to a very dynamic tour. I have had a great experience learning about the R-1830 and B-24 maintenance over the past few days and only wish I could stay on more to see (and fly) her off to the next stop!
