But the Norton "Goalkeeper" sorted it....
Now, I have never e-mailed, or received an e-mail from Chad, to the best of my memory, so i guess, he was bookmarking addresses, for future reference.
This nasty little virus, works by creating a duplicate SMTP server, which will then post to everyone in your address book, so, do the following.
1. go to address book, and add a new entry, OOO@000
. the effect of this, is to place this address at the top of your addy book. The virus will attempt to send a message to this address, but can't because it doesn't exist, therefore, it can't initiate. I know it's simple, but if it's good enough for MOD it's good enough for me! This is a simple fix, to prevent mass mailings from your inbox.
Next, run a virus killer, affter doing the following.
1. delete e-mails you know are affected.
2. Disconnect from the internet, while this is going on
3. When using Norton, set to "Scan sub-directiories, compressed files and folders" it may take a long time, but it will get everything.
4. Make sure, you have the latest virus definitions. McAfee has the latest, norton does not! But they probably will have this afternoon.
5. test the system. Send an e-mail to your hotmail account, after the box has been cleaned. If the hotmail alarm goes, then your box is still infected.
6. never, never, never open an executeable attachment. Pictures and txt files are not executables, but anything that arrives with...."This will make u laugh" or "a song" or "I wanted you to see this" is invariably a virus.
7. messgages that arrive with...."naughty Scandinavian College girls" etc, are diverted to a errrrrr special inbox for further investigation under controlled conditions :0)
8. If you received a virus from a trusted source, "BLOCK SENDER". If it's genuine, they'll get in contact to ask why. Setting up blocked sender rules, also diverts the e-mail to a protected inbox, or bounces the virus back to sender, before it can unleash it's payload.
Unfortunately, Microsoft products are full of holes, which virus writers do explot. So, if Paul Allen is listening, how about setting up a software house, that only writes software , to plug all the holes,in your erstwhile companies products?
