If one good thing becomes of the ever increasing cost of these planes, let's hope it will be that the accumulating value of an original P-38 will at some point outrun the accumulation of ice piling up over those airframes. 265 feet of ice accumulated over a 50-year period of time equals out to about 5 feet per year. These planes could be beyond the 300 foot level by now, and the sheer tonnage above them is constantly mounting. I'd say anyone who wants to feel good about what they will find at the bottom of that hole should get their act together within the next 5 to 10 years tops. It's really a shame to think of all those beautiful planes slipping away down there.

I wish someone could rally some government intervention. $30M from the combined budgets of the US, Canadian, and UK Air Forces would be a drop in the bucket for each. Each government could retain an example or two, depending on the roles played in the proposed 'training exercise'. Where's Indiana Jones when ya need him!? ;D
