Not an answer to your question, but of all the planes in the museum, I noticed a distinct lack of inline engined aircraft. This was a couple of years ago, but I remember the Firefly and the P-38 as two of the very few planes not fitted with a radial engine. The answer is probably no more complicated than the fact that Mr. Waltrip likes round engines ;) It would be interesting to get a behind the scenes perspective as to the motivation behind the buying/selling of aircraft by the various flying museums.
