Brian, you should be able to rename a directory on a cd-r and 'overwrite' a file within explorer.
A move corectly implemented should also display correctly in the tree of the cd-r, though losing a lot of cd-r space each time though so its a fix only.
Of course its not a -rw format and has some limitations.
I am not suggesting that you should try to use a cd-r as rewritable media, I am just pointing out that it can be nearly perfect for archive storage purposes and corrections can still be made to the content if required.
General: When you move a folder/file(s) hold down shift key whilst you drag and drop in order not to leave a copy behind, hold ctrl key down if you wish to leave a copy behind :-)
From memory, though I must research again, I think that a cd-r is more stable for longterm archive storage purposes than a -rw re-writeable format. (National museums & libraries may have the specification for long term storage media requirements)
If you are only likely to modify a photo archive once in a blue moon then its probably worth a cd-r only. If you want the facility of another hard disk which is cheap, more secure and removable, then a -rw is the way to go with what you have got.
