I've heard this one rumoured before, but I expect someone has mistaken one of the two displayed Furies for a P-47...semi-elliptical wings, bubble canopy, big radial engine, very wide-track main gear with prominent doors of broadly similar shape.
Researcher Doug MacPhail whom I know used to go to Cuba regularly (ultimately publishing a Cuban AF colonel's memoirs); he saw the Furies, MiGs, et cetera, but never mentioned a Thunderbolt, nor is there reference to one in the colonel's book.
When I was very much younger I once mistook the nose of an Avro Anson V project airframe for that of a Martin B-26--taking a Fury for a P-47 is a much smaller leap than that, I dare say!
