Mike,
If your British or Canadian no problems. If from the US it is basically nogo although it can be done 'via' etc.
We avoided the holiday compound beach resort, which I believe is 'off limits' to Cubans. We stopped in central Havana and after exploring to the west flew to the eastern end of the island, Santiago de Cuba, in a tired old Yak 42. We then spent about nine days driving back to Havana criss crossing to the important cultural and aviation interest sites.
The Air Force Museum, in the suburbs of Havana, seems to be unknown to the tourist industry and took some finding with a taxi. A fine spread of US and Russian types nicely spaced in a lush green setting with no people.
If you like old decrepit cars, photogenic architecture, Earnest Hemingway, rum, latin music and nightlife, with an overlay of military interest, it is a great place for some northern hemisphere winter sunshine. I recommend it to you.
