: A P-40 was Rebuilt in NZ and can't be returned to the USA
: because it is a Lend Leese Aircraft.
: Customs won't let it in.

Not directly related...but, well, sort of! At least, its a customs story! My previous posting about problems with French Customs over new regs concerning military equipment have developed further. I am taking some material over next week and it has taken ages to clear. Getting stuff out of France seems even more problematical. From a very good source I hear there are serious concerns from UK warbird operators about likely problems if they take warbirds from UK to France for various shows. Even rumours that one major player may pull out until this is resolved due to real concerns about aircraft being impounded. I have spoken today to the French Customs Attache in London who confirms there are new regs and that these will impact on those bringing military objects in or out of France. In the recent Armourer magazine an alarming story about guy being arrested at Calais, locked up, charged and threatened with confiscation of car because he had bought a brass shell case (inert) in Belgium. He is on bail and must go back for a trial later. This is as crazy as the Greek plane spotter spy fiasco. Worse, a well known military vehicle dealer has recently purchased a tank in French Army surplus auction only to have it "confiscated" on arrival at Calais because no French Army Certificate under the new laws. Concerns reaching my ears from attendees for this years Beltring from Europe, too. I think there is much more to this and that it will impact upon and worry a lot of people. Can anyone add anything new? It needs to be sorted, and we all need to know where we stand. I'll tell you if we finally get let in (or out!)with the Horsa, Typhoon cockpit and B-24 turrets! Or will they be seized despite the paperwork? Nothing would surprise me. Andy Saunders.
