I had seen (and photographed) the Corsair at Reilly's facility back in 1999 and 2000, I figured it was well on the way to flight... he had a seriously torn-up -5 (I think) outside of the shop, but I don't recall if that had a usable spar or not. Your description of it is quite helpful and enlightening... it is indeed very surprising that given the price that such a plane can fetch, that no one has previously looked into creating "new-build" spars. They'd be expensive, sure, but how much are these things going for now anyway? A lot, whatever it is.
Thanks again for the info, and for the info on Ladd Doctor; I had wondered about him from time to time, I never heard much beyond the initial reports and was unaware he was still suffering from the crash. Here's hoping for the best for him...
