Someone had pictures of the P-38's after arriving back in the US. AFAIK they were very substantial airframes. I believe these are the same planes pictured on Gary Larkins' Air Pirates website. He and a few other explorers attempted to recover some P-38's during the last decade or so. They got as far as the docks before they were impounded. Unless I'm mistaken, the picture above shows one of the two that finally made it home.
I'm pretty sure someone here is a little more knowlegable than I am on the subject! :)
