For this very reason I finally came to the conclusion that a truly accurate "survivors" list has to relate the diversity between each plane. A couple of decades ago I used to simply use four terms to describe surviving aircraft - operational, restoration, storage, or displayed. These days things are a bit more complicated. I now denote the aircraft that are largely reconstructed, and beyond that I simply try to include a detailed history of the modifications that have been carried out on each airframe over the years. That's really the only way to relate the truth of the matter since the commonalities of refurbishment from airframe to airframe are few and far between.

Data plate restorations most definately should be identified as such and cataloged in their own file with "quotes" on each side of the serial number to show that their applied identities are bogus, or meant for registration only.
