Hawker construction numbers are a black art!

Some licenced production i.e Canadian Car Foundation and Glosters seem to have used Hawker nos, then there own .. e.gg CCF\nnnnn and Gnnnnn
I even asked on Air Britain and they said 'black art'
The best I can get is the first digit is somehow the 'type'.....
