Boeing supports the product 60 years later
Boeing recently donated services to repair two hail-damaged World War II vintage airplanes owned by the Collings Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to giving Americans a "living history" about their heritage through direct participation in transportation-related events. Using the Boeing Electromagnetic Dent Remover tool, David Griffin of Boeing Airplane Recovery and Modification Services removed structural dents from a B-17 and a B-24 while the bombers were on tour at the Million Air facility, Long Beach, Calif. The EDR removes dents in aluminum skins in as little as 15 minutes by releasing a strong electrical current that produces magnetic fields on the inner and outer sides of a dent. The tool then collapses the magnetic field in front of the dent by discharging only half the initial energy. This creates an imbalance in magnetic fields that pushes the dented metal outward toward the EDR. Airplane Recovery and Modification Services is part of the Boeing Commercial Aviation Services? Maintenance Services organization.
