Interesting! An old friend who died last year was the daughter of the head of the Sudan Railway Co in late 1940's. She worked the railways as a ticket inspector then, and was based in Atbara. She often told me about a "twin engined Messerschmitt wreck" near the railwayline in the desert about 200km North of Atbara. Out there it would kind have made sense to follow the railway if possible and get down close to it in the event of trouble. I kind of dismissed it as probably something like an Anson....but now I wonder. Was it the Bf 110? She was certain about it being a Messerschmitt, but said it was burnt and well looted. As an air minded individual she was quite knowledgable and in later life did quite a lot of work with Leslie Hunt so she was certainly not talking entirely out of the back of her head! Her brother is still living, and he was at Atbara too so I'll ask him. Fascinating. Andy Saunders.
