Olivier,
When you have photos that are to dark or to light look at the negatives. If the negatives look ok with good density than the photofinisher did a poor job at printing them. In all the cheap labs like Walmart, Loblaws etc the machines are put on auto and a light meter reads the negative and prints the photos. If you go to a good lab than an operator looks at each image and adjust the density as needed. If you are not sure take one of the negatives to a a good lab and see how the prints compare. Where I work we have a Vivid Print Challenge and the difference is like night and day sometimes.
