I heard that these aircraft were trapped in customs (perhaps due to the US State Department) for years. I can't substantiate this, but that is what I recall a reliable source telling me.

I only wish my memory was so reliable... :-(

I think that these aircraft are well known to people in the Thunderbolt restoration community and any potentially serious buyers, just not to the general enthusiast.

I'm sure the owner isn't interested in publicising the details of why they took so long to recover. I'll bet Mike O'Leary will publish the info when the new owner has completed the restoration...
