In reply top USMC Air-Ground Museum closing posted by Rob Mears on Fri Mar 14, 2003 01:29:49 PM
Hi Rob,
I live just down the road from Quantico, and talked to their curator about this in September last year (after crawling inside the FG-1A!). They are closing it due to a lack of visitors supposedly, which I can believe, as I rarely saw people at this little gem of a museum. Even though it advertized from the highway, it is still a little hard to find, and because it is located on an active USMC base, and going through a Marine guard at the gate might be a little intimidating for a casual visitor! The plan is to open a huge new museum right at the edge of the highway, which should allow more exhibits to be displayed... it will need to be privately funded though, so who knows when/whether it will happen. Some of the airframes are supposed to be distributed to other museums in the meantime, while the new museum is built. That's all I know so far though.
Cheers,
Richard
