There was a good article on the aircraft in Warbirds Worldwide IIRC. I think this was the last of the 'Scat' aircraft and did fly combat missions , although I think the kills were scored in the 'previous' Scats flown by Olds.
No doubt Paul Coggan will tell you more.
I agree , always a tragedy to loose a warbird [ and pilot ], but a triple tragedy to loose a combat veteran ;-(.
