American Aero Services Visit

Posted by Tom Royal on Fri Feb 21, 2003 02:23:06 PM

Stopped in at American Aero Services during my lunch break and got a status report on a couple of their restoration projects.

Progress is still being made on the Collings F4U-5NL, and they expect that it will return to the air as soon as the end of the year! I've been looking forward to seeing her return to the air, and can't believe it's already been 6 years since she went for a swim in the Atlantic.

I remember there was some discussion regarding the radome being installed, and I was told that they do indeed plan on installing the radome, although it will fly without it first. The original radome on the previous installation was lost in the crash, so a new one needs to be fabricated. The priority is to get her back in the air, then work will begin on getting a new radome fabricated and mounted.

Work on Jack Roush's P-51D "Glamouse Glennis III" is still going strong, with an optimistic completion date of some time in October. Realistically I'm guessing it's first big public appearance won't be until Oshkosh 2004, as there is still a lot of work to be done.

Also in the hangar was the Collings Foundation new-build Yak awaiting assembly, as well as a T-28 undergoing maintenance.

Regards,

Tom
