The F-86 was the most important for several reasons. First, its swept wing wasthe product of lots of study, and review of all German reasearch on the idea. The Mig 15 was similarly constructed. However the F-86 had an all moving tail, allowing supersonic flight to become possible without a research aircraft, the Mig 15 was cheaper, but without an all moving tail and less advanced wing, was not on the same level. Captured F-86 pieces from Korea and development led to the Mig 17, finally supersonic and the scourge of the F-4 over Vietnam. The F-86 equipped many different Air Forces, and became the foundation for new jets production in Canada, and continued to develop into the superb Mk 6. The F-86 and its variants became the standard opponent to Migs of all types in many areas of the world. While the 21 is a prolific design, and many nations use it, it has not been a progenitor of other aircraft and like the F-16 is a single design fulfilling a requirement, not changing the nature of aircraft as we know them. This does not change the fact that the F-4, Mig 21 and even the F-8 were not great airplanes, they just don't have the family tree of the F-86...Just my 6 pence
