In reply top Dave I agree but posted by Rob Rohr on Wed Feb 12, 2003 07:21:07 PM

I still have to support those who support the industry with their enthusiam and cash.

I really have a hard time accepting that, as a warbird owner, I must make my aircraft avaliable to the public. I do, because I want to - not because I have to.

If I wanted to lock the hangar doors tomorrow, I don't want to think I would be subject to criticism or ill thought. If I want to paint my aircraft lime green and put it at the bottom of my swimming pool I think that is my right. If I want to crate it up and seal it in a cave, I can do that too.

As an (apparently) sane person, I would never consider doing such things, but others may and there ain't nothing any of us can do about it.

By all reports, Mr. Allen is spending a great deal of money to perfectly restore his aircraft - although a very private man, I'm sure they will emerge into the public arena as time goes on. I am more pleased that these artifacts are going to a loving and generous home where they, undoubtedly, will be given the best care and attention possible.

I think Mr. Allen gets much attention because of his profile, but rest assured there are many, many more warbirds locked away in private collections that are never made avaliable to the press or public.

I very much agree that I would rather see as much as possible out where the public can see it. But those who don't want to share don't have to. I think this annoyance is somewhat isolated to the warbird world. How many of the old masters are on public display? How many sit locked in vaults?

I think as long as items have been collected, a certain percentage has been locked away only to be appreciated by the owners. This is a reality that may sadden some, but it is still reality. The only thing anyone can do is fork out the cash and do what they think is the right thing.

I fear though, that we would just move on to the next criticism. Do we then go after those who paint their aircraft inaccurately? How about those who throw in extra seats or, god forbid, modify them for racing???? It is real life, you own it, you can do what you please with it.

If Mr. Allen came knocking on my door tomorrow with his cheque book as open as everyone says it is, he probably would have another airplane to lock away.

I don't think it really would bother me in the least. In fact I think I would be pleased it would be going to a good home.
