In reply top If you won the lottery what five aircraft???? posted by Rob Rohr on Tue Feb 04, 2003 08:44:09 AM

I think I'd mostly concentrate on Luftwaffe types, since they need more representation in the warbird community. Here are my choices, although not all are Luftwaffe.

1. Fw190 series. Most likely a D-series, since we need some back in the air.
2. Can't leave out a new-build Ta-152. There's only one left in existance.
3. The B-17 sitting on the ice in Newfoundland. Nobody is ever going to see it where it's at and it would be better-off recovered and restored. Get the bloody thing to a warmer climate.
4. The Lake Mead B-29, if it's not too damaged. National Park Server property---my behind! It's 300 feet down in the dark, too deep for recreational diving, and it will never be seen unless it's recovered.
5. The McGuire AFB P-38. It's serving little purpose sitting out in the open getting covered with bird-droppings. I'd even pay to replace it with a fiberglass replica during the sale. (For that matter--if Newfoundland wanted a fiberglass B-17 to put back on the ice, I'd give them one. After all, we're talking 10 million dollars, here :oP)

Honorable mentions:
1. An He-111 with original Jumo 211s--airworthy of course.
2. An airworthy Me-410 (new-build or recovery.) (I'm surprised there's not a project like this already.)
3. Stuka. If there's one aircraft that's representative of WWII air warfare, this one is it.

Or, with 10 million dollars maybe I'd get into the engine business making parts or new engines. Somebody's going to have to do it eventually if we're gong to keep flying them. New DB engines or parts anyone?
