I recall that Ray told me that he obtained the project from someone in the midwest (Indiana or Ohio?). The restoration he performed was pretty straight forward. The aircraft was already stripped and there was no apparent crash, fire, or corrosion damage when he bought it. I do think that it was assembled from parts however, and Ray had to purchase yet more to complete the restoration.
Anything of the nature you mention happened prior to Ray purchasing the aircraft.
