The American services have both numbers and names for their aircraft, but tend to use the numbers predominantly; us Brits tend to be biggest on names,because the aircraft can't be called by anything else! Conversely, and not surprisingly, when a US aircraft has been adopted by RAF/RN, its type number sometimes achieves quite widespread, but unofficial, service use, e.g. F-4 (Phantom). IIRC, the Mustang, though, was not given its name by US services (USAAF) as it was designed to a Brit
spec.
