In reply top Cees, is the Stirling recoverable? posted by Tony on Tue Nov 13, 2001 10:36:50 AM
" Not as a collection of parts, I mean, an intact airframe?"
Tony,
N3654 was the first Stirling to come down in Holland. Since the crash six of the crew are still listed as missing. Our foundation has been trying to get the wreck recovered to give these guys a decent burial. This one and the Lanc in the IJsselmeer (unfortunately not substantially complete) have our priority. So they are not complete and do not fit in this topic perhaps.
Alright then, I would like to see the following aircraft
recovered:
The Beaufighter II which is supposedly lying in the Amstelmeer, The Do215 which is substantially complete and lying on a sandbank in the Waddenzee, The complete Lancaster (minus the no. 2 engine)in the IJsselmeer, the large chunks of Manchester still lying nearby this Lanc,
The large unidentified four-engined bomber which is lying in the Waddenzee and which slips beneath the sand now and then and which I have been unable to visiti so far because it is lying in a seal-reservation and the keeper is reluctant to give permission.
That is it for the moment. Hope this list qualifies.
Cheers
Cees
