The pilot armour plate at station 5 was a structural part of the airframe. This is mentioned in the structural repair manual T.0 1-25C-3, but it's removal was allowed for "training aircaft" as per T.O 125C-155. The fuselage was strong enough for flight and landing loads, but not "turnovers", without the armour.
