B-29 wing moves, prepares for rejoin
The 99-foot center wing section of the B-29 Superfortress known as "Doc" was moved to the Northwest Hangar on the east side of Boeing Wichita's campus just before the holiday break. It took two 35-ton cranes working together to lift the section onto a dolly for the slow move from the Experimental Flight Hangar to its new home. The move to the Northwest Hangar is to accommodate major body rejoin. "It's more cost-effective to make the move now rather than wait until after the rejoin has been accomplished," said Dick Ziegler, B-29 Restoration Project manager. Volunteers continue to work on "Doc" to restore it to airworthiness. -- Buzz Shaddy photo
