Hmmm, interesting, I don't know of any B-17's along the BC part of route lost, other than the one that crashed into the lake near Carcross and was recovered intact, by divers of the time equipped to salvage it. It was later piled into the scrap heap in Whitehorse, but that's the Yukon. More Common B-24', B-25's lost, usually in the Yukon. According to my reference books no B-17's were allocated under the lend lease route, but were used for US operations in Alaska. The thaw in 1943 was in April, but in order to be in "deep mud" it would have to be between Fort Nelson and Fort St. John, but the lakes are not typically deep, more like muskeg swamps. North of that, there are deep lakes, but not typically muddy due to mountainous terrain. If anybody has any clue as to location, I'd love to hear it, i can reach any part of the BC or Alberta part of the lend-lease route in route in a matter of hours to verify.
