As you know about 9,000 P-51D/K's were built. These were serialed and sold to the USAAF with identities. A number were also sent to other countries, and some built only as parts. Many spares were also made. Over the years, especially as the 1980's became the first time when "building" a Mustang was feasable, collectors could have a wide mismatch of parts. An austrailian fuselage, perhaps unflown, a wing from Israel, a tail section from a damaged N registered Mustang and a few Latin American parts. What to call it? If you built it up from whatever the center section was, you would probably have to register an experimental aircraft. A limited Category aircraft is worth more. The paperwork of a crashed aircraft, limited category especially, would allow your rebuild to be worth more if you have to sell it. Perhaps this is why...
