This is completely a preception issue, not one that adhere's to what an aircraft really is. Is an original but static P-39 a representative of its type? Lets say to rebuild that P-39 to flight you have to rebuild (replicate) 40 percent of the sheet metal structure. Isnt it closer to a replica? Or is it closer to what would have been done to keep it flying years back. When you get closer to the actual cutting of metal, you will see that what they have done is simply what will have to be done 30 years from now with EVERY type pre 1950. Now how about a run of Blackburn Firecrests!
