:Simply put - if you want to buy aircraft the best thing to do isn't to advertise the fact that your incredibly wealthy otherwise you will end up paying top dollar for every thing !...not strictly true though is it David? Remember the TFC P40-B? I can't see how Steven Grey would've been tempted to sell her for less than double what he had payed out to get her in the air seeing as he loves his american aircraft so much. And wasn't there a quote from a certain US city recently which Paul Mac traced back to Mr. Allen's own area which basically said "he will pay whatever it takes to get an aircraft with history" and also it is alleged that the source for the advert in which "huge rewards will be given for information regarding aircraft crash sites in or around the Papua New Guinea area" which resulted in the P-38 recovery which was clouded in secrecy on its journey from PNG, through Aus and finally allegedly to Westpac at Rialto, very much a cloak and dagger operation and therefore blatantly he doesn't give a hoot how much he spends whether it's top dollar or not. Everyone in the business knows about him and his wealth so therefore your idea of him "not advertising this fact" is irrelevant. Yes he has some remarkable restorations in progress and the work being done is top notch but you would expect that with the amount of cash he flashes. Also if most warbirds are "semi-for sale" then he must pay over the odds to get them as warbirds that are on the market with history go for top dollar and ones that are "semi-for sale" must therefore fetch a higher price and in doing so has to go under the noses of people to get what he wants, often putting some out of joint ;)
