I believe the air base was a Red China Air Force Base. I seem to recall he said they were intercepted by Aircobras or Kingcobras with the Red Star, but were not shot down!
It was a fascinating article on Mr. Reinhert - he explored our New Guinea bases shortly after the war, also.
