I'm not sure if he is aware of the whole story or not. I related the circumstance to someone at Oshkosh back in 2000 who subsequently approached Jim about it. Apparently it wasn't really anything worth raising an eyebrow over. The plane has a clean registry, and it's probably a heck of alot more fascinating to fly the beast than to muse over a borrowed registry number (though it is painted on the side of the plane)! That kind of stuff is mostly inconsequential to pilots, but it does play hell with the record keepers :)

I would have probably been more vocal about it with Mr. Read, but telling a warbird owner that their million dollar investment might actually be a burnt-out parts plane still sitting in the Florida weeds is not the best way to spice up a conversation ;)
