Hi All,
Not sure if anyone has seen this but it is reported in the Sunday Times that Daimler Chrysler has bought Brooklands, see the report below.
Daimler buys Brooklands
Dominic O?Connell
DAIMLER CHRYSLER, the German automotive group that makes Mercedes cars, has bought Brooklands, the famous Surrey track regarded as the spiritual home of British motor sport.
The car giant will turn the 150-acre site into a Mercedes ?brand centre?, where customers will be able to see exhibits on the history of the marque, tour the Brooklands motor museum, and drive Mercedes cars on a new track.
Daimler Chrysler bought the property from the Universities Superannuation Scheme and Shearer Property Group. The purchase price is thought to have been more than ?5m.
The deal is conditional on Daimler Chrysler receiving planning permission for the redevelopment of the site.
Brooklands was the first motor-racing circuit in Britain. The massive banked track was used for speed-record attempts and races before the second world war. Alliot Verdon-Roe also made the first British aircraft at Brooklands, and set up the first Avro factory there.
Geoff Brady, managing director for Daimler Chrysler UK Retail, said: ?We are working with Elmbridge borough council, the Brooklands museum and English Heritage to ensure that our proposals will help to preserve the rich history of Brooklands.?
I just wonder if there are any DB engines onsite, that nobody knows about and I hope that R-Robert will be safe.
Anybody what to buy a site in Stuttgart or Munich and set up a Spitfire "Brand Centre" (Triumph Spitfire that is).
Tony
