Norwegian Gladiator Queries

Posted by Paul McMillan on Sat Oct 26, 2002 12:34:03 PM

All,

I am trying to make head and tail of the Gladiators recovered over the years from Norway..

Lake Lejaskogsvatn recovered ones:

N5579 (wreckage) was stored at in Norway
N5628 (wreckage) is preserved at the RAF Museum at Hendon
N5641 is preserved at the RNoAF Museum at Bodo
N5589 (wreckage) last noted at RAF Wildenrath in 88. Maybe going to Retro and Track???

Other Norwegian ones:

N5719 shot down 22/05/40 wreckage under restoration with Retro & Track as G-CBHO

N5914 (some sources state that this was N5893) shot down by German ace Lt H. Lent east of Rombaksfjorden on 02/06/40; P/O J. L. Wilkie killed. Aircraft recovered in the end of 1998 and brought to Great Britain for restoration by Jet Age Museum.

L1988 - (46 Sqn) Lost 29/05/40. Wreckage recovered by Bodo Aviation Museum around 1998.

??? - Wing from Norwegian Gladiator that is in storage with RNoAF Musuem

??? - FAA Museum (Fuselage delivered 2002) I have seen this quoted as N5579 (this is to be restored as N5518).

Now the questions are:

With the 5 way deal between RNoAF/Malta Air Museum/Jet Age Museum/FAA Musuem and Retro and Track, what aircraft is going where?

Did the FAA get the fuselage of N5579 from Norway and is this the basis of their new fuselage or is it N5589?

What is the basis of the Norwegian Gladiator, the wing of which will provide the 'Norwegian ID'.

Both Andy S and Mikael have eluded to more recent recoveries, whats the story there??

Thanks

Paul (trying to sort the wheat from the chaff) over all these goings on...
