The connecting rod is attached to the crankshat with a bolt on either side of the big end. The rod ends for higher performance engines can sometimes use bigger bolts for more holding strength. The rod bolts will stretch under extreme conditions, and even new never used bolts must be tested to determine wether or not they are strong enough. Assuming one of the bolts creeping a bit or letting go, the bottom of the connecting rod will go thru the side of the block as it is thrown out by the turning crank. This makes the block suitable for static display or marine use in the anchor division.
