AN ambitious plan is under way to recreate the first flight over the summit of Mount Everest and mark three important anniversaries.
Work has already started on building a replica Westland Wallace, one of the largest single-engined biplanes ever made, which flew over the Himalayas in 1933.
Organisers of the Wings Over Everest project hope to recreate the journey next year.
The flight will also commemorate the centenary of the Wright Brothers' first flight, in 1903, and the conquest of Everest by Sir Edmund Hillary and his Sherpa guide, Tenzing Norgay, in 1953.
George Almond, the project manager, who is getting support for the flight by using the internet to attract aviation enthusiast world-wide, said: "This return to the Himalayas is a chance for anyone, anywhere, to join the supporters' club, to enjoy a shared tribute to these great events and be able to say 'I helped to make that happen'.
"This is a real 30s-style epic over the world's biggest location."
