Tony,
Sounds like a scam then, if you look at the poor Halibag.
But then again, if someone paid a large sum for the information where the airframe is and then discover that it cannot be touched. Not very intelligent either.
This case has been going through my find for years and doesn't leave me alone. Is there any confirmation that the bombload is still on board or is still only assumed?
Reason for this question is that as soon as the bombers reached the enemy coast (our poor little flat Holland) they would arme the bombs. As soon as a bomber with a full load of bombs on board would try to ditch the thing would blow up. If I were an pilot and trying to get out of a blazing bomber with bombload still aboard I wouldn't think of ditching it but bail out immediately.
If the aircraft is there in one piece and the crew got out safely then the only reason for that could be that the bombload was jettisoned over the target or before ditching.
Just my own thought of course, what are yours?
