To say that the centre section is simply THE aeroplane is a very simplistic view to take, and some may say too simplistic when one considers the amount of blood, sweat, tears and money that goes in to a restoration. Hypothetical example. Say for example an airworthy Spit suffers a fuel tank fire which burns out the cockpit, and by some good fortune leaves the wings and tail section reasonably undamaged. The machine is rebuilt with a new centre section. What does that make that aeroplane? An orphan, a replica, a reconstruction??? Of course not! It's the same aeroplane. Fine, the precious data plate and the panel the plate was originally attached to may be gone, but it's still that aeroplane. The fire/incident and subsequent repair simply becomes part of the (probably already diverse) history of the machine.
