: : are no longer hypothetical.....they just got personal!
: :
: : Hi All,
: :
: : I have learned that it is indeed Jack Roush who purc
: ha
: : sed the remains of Uncle Dean's Mustang. Here is what I
: kn
: : ow......
: :
: : There is no dataplate. There is only a sworn affida
: vi
: : t stating this is indeed 43-12252. There is no airframe,
: o
: : r center fusilage, only pieces.
: :
: : I seriously doubt there is anything that in its pre
: se
: : nt condition could be considered airworthy. It has been
: me
: : ntioned that they choose to melt down a piece of the wre
: ck
: : age and fashion it into a "new" part, made from original
: m
: : aterial. (There was a whole lot of copper in that radiat
: or
: : !). This way something of the original material will be
: in
: : cluded in the "new" plane.
: :
: : I have also been told, and I knew this already, that
: M
: : r. Roush is free to rebuild this Mustang any way he choo
: se
: : s. As I am sure most of you already know my feelings on
: th
: : is have been very strong all along, but since I am not t
: he
: : one writing the checks it really doesn't matter what I
: fe
: : el.
: :
: : It is possible that 43-12252 will fly again as an ol
: iv
: : e drab, P-51B, but it is also possible that it will be "
: tr
: : ansformed" into a Mustang which is more famous, and will
: g
: : enerate more interest then my Uncle's humble story.
: :
: : So, my question is this...... What will 43-12252, be
: w
: : hen she is completed? She can't be a restoration, there
: is
: : n't enough left to restore.....So what will she be? A re
: pl
: : ica? A new Mustang with one historical artifact imbedded
: s
: : omewhere in her frame?? I value your opinions on this!
: : Karen
: :
: : One thing I found kind of eerie.....I have to find o
: ut
: : when Mr. Roush purchased the remains of Dean's plane...
: ..
: : I'm thinking it was probably in January 2002, but anyway
: ,
: : the eerie thing.....Jack Roush purchased the remains of
: De
: : an's plane, and then nearly died in the exact same way t
: ha
: : t Dean did!
:
: Hi Karen
:
: I wouldn't say this is a can of worms, just a 'problem' th
: at many people sweep under the carpet. This is a 'problem'
: that eventually will have to be dealt with for those that
: really care about the history/provenance of an airframe.
:
:
: I'll state again that most people believe the identity of
: an aircraft is based on that huge chunk of fuselage we cal
: l the centre section. Some people say it doesn't matter, o
: thers say it does, others don't give a hoot as long as it
: flies, others care passionately. Some never make any real
: contribution to the debate, just go off on their own tange
: nt.
:
: I think eventually we will have to have some sort of defin
: ition that the majority will agree to at least use as guid
: elines.
:
: I apreciate that to you this is more important than most d
: ue to your personal involvement. I certainly don't have al
: l the answers..... but it is an interesting debate.
:
:
: kind regards
:

Dear Karen,

Another Paul this time...
It's my personal opinion that an a/c wreckage in which one has died (like your uncle )should be displayed in the way it was found to commemorate the pilot or shouldn't be displayed at all. It all depends on the relatives still around.

Regards,

Paul
